John Lennon Leaves the Beatles

Lennon told his bandmates that he was leaving the Beatles shortly after they finished recording their final album, Abbey Road, but his departure was only made public in April 1970, more than six months after the secret break-up. The group's final live performance took place on the rooftop of London's Apple building on January 30, 1969, while the Beatles were recording the Let It Be album.
