Northeast Blackout of 2003 Begins

Caused by a cascading failure of more than 100 power plants originating in Ohio, the Northeast Blackout of 2003 was the largest power outage in North American history and affected an estimated 50 million people in eight US states and Ontario, Canada. Power was not fully restored in New York and Toronto until August 16, and outage-related financial losses were estimated at $6 billion.
