Ferdinand Magellan Sets Sail to Circumnavigate Globe

Magellan's expedition sailed down the South American coast, through the Strait of Magellan, and across the Pacific Ocean, which Magellan himself named. The voyage proved definitively the roundness of the earth and revealed the Americas as a new world, separate from Asia. Though Magellan is often credited with being the first to circumnavigate the globe, he himself died in the Philippines and never returned to Europe. How many of his original crew members made it back to Spain?

Supermassive Black Holes

A supermassive black hole is a black hole containing the mass of between a hundred thousand and tens of billions of Suns. Scientists believe that most, if not all, galaxies, including the Milky Way, contain supermassive black holes at their galactic centers. They also cite a link between the mass of the supermassive black hole in the center of a galaxy and the morphology, or structure, of the galaxy itself. Herbert Hoover

At the outbreak of World War I, Hoover devoted himself to humanitarian efforts, arranging the return of Americans stranded abroad and securing supplies for civilians of war-devastated Europe. Elected president of the US in 1928, his administration was dominated by the economic depression that followed the 1929 stock market crash. Believing the economy would regenerate spontaneously, he was reluctant to extend federal activities. What event spurred Hoover to order federal troops to the capital?
