Teutonic Knights Defeated at Battle of Grunwald

The Teutonic Order, a German military religious order founded during the 3rd Crusade, sought to expand Christendom through missions and conquest, building numerous towns which it then governed. Though Poland and Lithuania had become Christian states, the Teutonic Knights invaded. After the Order's defeat by the Poles and Lithuanians at the Battle of Grunwald, its strength waned, and it survives today as a charitable clerical organization.
