The British Museum Opens Its Doors

The British Museum today contains over 7 million objects important to human history and culture. It opened to the public in 1759 and was based largely on the collections of the physician and scientist Sir Hans Sloane. The first notable addition was courtesy of a British Ambassador to Naples, who sold his collection of Greek and Roman artifacts to the museum in 1782. Later, the museum acquired the Rosetta Stone and the Elgin Marbles. Why are parts of the collection disputed?

Night Vision Goggles

Night vision goggles (NVGs) are a type of optical instrument that allow for vision in the dark. Night vision technology is also used in rifle scopes, security cameras, and binoculars. There are two main types of NVGs. Active NVGs project infrared light, similar to a remote control's, and produce an image out of what is reflected back; passive NVGs amplify any light in an area several thousand times using an image intensifier. Why is the resulting image tinted green and not another color?

Born on a day like today

Molière was a massively popular dramatist, director, and actor in 17th century France. His major works include Les Précieuses Ridicules, Le Misanthrope, and Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Molière's genius lay in exposing the hypocrisies and follies of his society through satire, and he made several political enemies by poking fun at the traditions and institutions of his day. He collapsed onstage while playing the title role in which one of his plays?
