Treaty of Ghent Signed

The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812 between the United States and the United Kingdom. Although the treaty was signed in December, fighting did not end for several weeks, because it took time for news of the treaty to reach North America. The treaty was officially proclaimed on February 18. In signing the treaty, the Americans agreed to stop trying to expand their territory north into what is today known as Canada.
