Second Boer War Erupts in South Africa

The Boer Wars were fought between Dutch settlers in South Africa, called Boers or Afrikaners, and the British Empire. The Second Boer War began when gold was discovered in the province of the Transvaal, a territory that had been annexed to Great Britain but was headed by the strongly anti-British statesman Paul Kruger. As English settlers moved into the region, Dutch governors began taxing them heavily and limiting their rights. How many civilians died in the war?

Henry Heinz
